Social Networking Sites

There have been a lot of social media platforms that have come and gone like myspace and Hi5.  We have now a shortlist of social media companies that dominate the space and they are Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn.  I know I'm missing some other social media sites that are also dominant but these four were the first ones to get into the space.  All of these social media sites offer great platform for their users to share, view and connect with other users.  Out of the four social media sites mentioned above Instagram was bought by Facebook and LinkedIn was bought by Microsoft Corp.

Comparing these four social media sites requires one to understand why they are using it in the first place.  Facebook is mainly regarded as social media for family and friends to connect and keep in touch.  While Instagram is usually regarded as millennial social media site where they can share pictures and stories for 24 hours.  It is for tight knit group of people who follow each other or some celebrities.  Twitter is a interesting case as it prides itself in being able to share news or anything trending instantaneously.  People are able to see what is trending and react.  Currently, the president uses twitter a lot and his tweet has instant impact on how the stock market moves.  Finally, LinkedIn is a special purpose social media site for professionals and students who want to connect and improve their professional network.  There are companies who post jobs and people who look for jobs through LinkedIn.

My impression of all these four social media sites is that all of them are important and serve a special purpose for everyone which is the reason I have account in all of these sites.

Blog about Twitter

Blog about Twitter      Twitter is an microblogging and social networking service where users can post and interact with others.  The messages or short microblogs are known as "tweets" and users are limited to 280 characters in a tweet.      Comparing Twitter to Blackboard discussion is like comparing a Ferrari to a Honda.  Honda is good but Ferrari is just better with its design and performance capabilities.  I think of the same while comparing Twitter discussion to Blackboard discussion.  Twitter has better design.  Its user focused design is miles ahead of Blackboard and the numerous features it has over Blackboard can be another blog post in itself.  I can see seamlessly and in blazing speed what my colleagues are talking about and see a specific topic discussion by using hashtag while in Blackboard I would have to go to a discussion, then click on one my friends post, then anoth...

Blog vs. Wiki

Blog vs. Wiki Blogs and wikis are web 2.0 technologies that allow creators to host an array of material from text to videos and music online.  Unlike previous web 1.0 technologies, they allow visitors to interact, contribute material and publish new content. Generally speaking a blog post is one person's opinion where people can opt in to have a discussion through comments.  It is geared towards sharing of news, knowledge or expertise.  Being a blogger with huge following allows the blogger to profit through advertisement on their blog site or by using affiliate marketing where they promote products from sponsors.   While blogs allow readers to interact with the blogger through comments it however, doesn't allow them to modify the blog posts.  And this is one key distinction between blogs and wikis.  Wikis are more collaborative due to the fact that they enable readers to modify content that are already posted or even create new content page where othe...

Creativity and New Media

Creativity and New Media     New media has enabled us to become creative in many ways that was unimaginable just few years ago.  For this assignment, I used Instagram to create a story where I can connect and interact with my current and potential followers.  Instagram now allows variety of ways that enable dynamic interaction between its users.  Few of those features include questions box, poll and quiz on stories that last for 24 hour span once posted.       In my Instagram story, I used multiple features to make it more attractive and there are few potential business opportunities as well.  I just tried to be casual with the question and included a countdown.  I also included a song that I thought goes well with the story.  If this story was for business then the question could've been about an upcoming album drop by an artist who wants to advertise on social media platform.  The countdown would be the release date and ...
